Elmore Leonard is one of my old favorites. I was unaware of his statement about "suddenly." I believe it was Liesl Jobson or Roy Kesey who told me that, so I have always avoided it.
Interestingly (to me, at least), it is often used by songwriters, i.e The Beatles and The Carpenters.
Probably! It’s often repeated as an iron clad rule. I do think bending over backwards to avoid banned words can sometimes result in awkward phrasing. Just realized I used it in the last paragraph of an upcoming story! Oops!
