“I cradle the soft protuberance of my belly, imagine my insides, vast and empty and peaceful as Wyoming.” ~from my story, “Wyoming” Hot Flash Literary

Hi everyone! This week I have LOTS of announcements and newsy bits to share. Further down, I share five awesome moves you should try in your flash fiction writing today and beyond…

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

A few spots remain for THIS SATURDAY’S (Sept. 13th) 3-in-90 workshop! These have become quite popular and are hugely productive and fun. 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Eastern, U.S. Sign up HERE. ALL SESSIONS ARE RECORDED.

I’ll also be leading a two-hour generative session for Cleaver Magazine on Sept. 28th! Sign up via Submittable HERE. SESSION WILL BE RECORDED.

Three New Kids on The Block Worth Checking Out!

  1. The Flash Fiction Institute - Brainchild of Grant Faulkner & Meg Pokrass. Here is their website. Some wonderful offerings available. I am most honored to be a member of the Advisory Board for this worthy endeavor.

“The Flash Fiction Institute is a space for writers of micro-fiction, tiny stories, short-shorts, miniatures, tiny fiction, sudden fiction, hint fiction, postcard fiction, post-it fiction, prose poetry, and all those curious about how less is more. In short, the Flash Fiction Institute is an online school and resource hub for Flash Fiction writers.”

  1. Lit Match Collective - Founded by steve chang (fiction editor of Okay Donkey) and Autumn Eve Watts (fiction editor of Guernica) and launched September 1st, LMC is a community space for writers to connect and grow with LOTS of offerings and three membership levels. I’ll be posting fun prompts and challenges on their Discord channel on the 1st and 15th of each month, so check them out!

“Our scheduled activities, events, and discussions offer company and coaching throughout the creative process. From drafting and development, revision and more revision, to polish and submission: we're here to help. We host communal writing sessions to get you working 💪, live process groups to stay on track 🎯, member readings to build confidence 🔥, and community spaces to discuss craft, publishing, and writing life ✨ ...plus a whole lot more! (including corny jokes).”

  1. Hot Flash Literary - Founded by editors Tina Carlson and Jessica Klimesh, they’ve just put out their stunning inaugural issue, including words by Mikki Arnoff, Christine H. Chen, Diane Gottlieb, Stella Reed, Chelsea Stickle, Nancy Stohlman, Huina Zheng, and yours truly! Consider sending them something for Issue #2!

“Hot Flash Literary is an online journal of flash whose mission is to give women-identifying writers a voice; specifically, it’s a place for women’s voices to ignite. Like an ember.

Issues are loosely themed, with a goal of highlighting the experience of being a woman, whatever that means to each individual writer. The themes are meant to inspire but not constrain.”

Now for those five awesome moves…!

  1. I’ve written about this before, but for those who’ve not seen this or need a refresher, “exposed revision” is a very powerful tool in flash and poetry. Read all about it here:
