Whew!!! And WOW!
Congratulations, everyone, on a wildly productive first day! Thank you for your energy and for the wonderful support and feedback you’re giving each other. Let’s keep it up!
Note: Though I’ll be posting every day this month, some of you may prefer not to receive daily emails. If you go to “Manage Your Subscriptions” under “Notifications” you can toggle off the part where it says “receive emails for new posts.” I recommend that you do receive emails for new threads/chats however as I will be using that feature throughout the month. If you haven’t downloaded the Substack app yet, you may find that useful as well.
Today, we’re going to look at the tiniest version of flash fiction, the microfiction. Microfiction is variously defined by different word limits. For our purposes, let's say 200 words or fewer. Microfiction often resembles prose poetry. The line between flash and prose poetry is wafer thin at times. But please set aside any need to categorize your work at this juncture.
Whether writing this small is your jam or not (I confess, it’s not mine, though I’ve written a few, i.e., “Watermelon” and “Space Man”), it’s useful to develop your concision and distillation chops. Practicing microfiction will make you a better writer overall.
