“Almost Heaven” Eastern Panhandle of beautiful West Virginia on the outskirts of Charles Town
Hi friends!
First of all, I want to express my enormous gratitude to all of you! What follows is information about upcoming workshops (and a retreat), but if these are off-limits to you for any reason, or you’re simply not interested, no worries! Read no further. And please know I am committed to providing regular substantive and inspiring content for you all right here on this newsletter. Thank you for being here and supporting what I do.
For those of you who are interested, there’s LOTS of info here, so bear with me: Registrations are open now for my upcoming ALL-NEW 3-in-90 generative workshop series! These sessions have become very popular and are my favorite classes to teach. ALSO! My friend, Ellen Weeren, who runs A Reason to Write, has invited me to teach and provide one-on-one consultations at an upcoming writers’ retreat near Harper’s Ferry, WV (on the outskirts of Charles Town) this October! See details and registration info below.
ALL-NEW 3-in-90 Live Workshops!
$50 per session. EARLY BIRD SPECIAL: Get all three sessions for $100 through THIS FRIDAY, August 16th. Best value! Register HERE
In these 90 minute live sessions (on Webex, similar to Zoom) you will:
* Learn new concepts in flash fiction
* Acquire new flash writing skills & tools
* Be inspired by the best exemplars of published flash fiction
* Write to prompts aimed at breaking through writing blocks
* Innovate with the flash form - Be prepared to surprise yourself!
* Have a blast writing in a safe and supportive environment
Expect to leave each session with THREE new flash drafts. These workshops have resulted in many published and anthologized stories for the hundreds of students who have taken part!
THE SESSIONS
All sessions run for 90 minutes from 1:00 - 2:30 Eastern Time U.S. and will be recorded. Everyone who registers will have lifetime access to the recording. (Some writers prefer to watch the recording and work through the prompts on their own time.)
Saturday, Sept. 28th - How to Write Standout Flash Fiction
As a past journal editor and frequent contest judge, I know what makes some flash stand out from the crowd. I'll provide tips and prompts aimed at getting your stories to the shortlist or the top of the slush pile.
Saturday, Oct. 12th - Quirky, Complex, & Memorable: Creating Compelling Characters
Even the most beautifully written flash won't work unless our readers truly care about the characters. In this session, we'll write to fun, unique prompts aimed at creating unforgettable characters in the very short form.
Saturday, Dec. 7th - Writing with Courage & Conviction
"There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.” ~Toni Morrison
Now more than ever, it's important to say what we mean and mean what we say. Prompts in this session will be focused on bringing power and authenticity to our work. Writing with conviction forces us to weigh the importance of our words and makes us better thinkers, if not better humans.
$50 per session. EARLY BIRD SPECIAL: Get all three sessions for $100 through FRIDAY, August 16th. Best value! Register HERE
TERMS/CANCELLATION POLICY: Payment due upon registration. There is no refund for cancelled live "3 in 90" workshops, but recordings will be made available to all registrants.
THE RETREAT

I’d love for you to join us at this gorgeous venue! Go HERE for more information and registration! There have already been some applications, so this retreat may sell out quickly! NOTE: Receive discounted pricing if you register before midnight (EST) August 30th!
From Ellen: “We will be staying at this beautiful “Almost Heaven” home in the Eastern Panhandle of beautiful West Virginia on the outskirts of Charles Town (not to be confused with Charleston on the other side of the state).
The registration fee covers workshop costs, one individual session with Kathy Fish, workshop materials, private room with bedding and towels, continental breakfast, lunch, dinner, light snacks, parking, and welcome gift.
Writing spaces abound in the nooks and crannies and porches of this amazing home. And when you just need a break, there are fire pits, 2 hot tubs, arcade games, an exercise room, a pool table, a ping pong table, and a rescue farm next door (that we are welcome to visit) with cows, ducks, horses, chickens, bunnies and more.”
Sounds wonderful, huh! Let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks, my friends.
Peace & Love,
Kathy
I signed up - so excited but you may not be aware that 10/12 is Yom Kippur (I will have to sneak away from prayers to attend but hopefully it will be during a break..)
